Policing is more effective against eggs of non‐natal versus natal workers at early colony stages in a bumblebee

چکیده

Eusocial insect colonies are vulnerable to exploitation by egg-laying workers arising either as natal reproductive or non-natal ‘drifting’ (intraspecific social parasites). Worker is potentially costly the colony, but queens and can counter its costs via egg eating (queen worker policing). Bumblebee exhibit laying both workers: collectively lay more eggs do so only after a specific point in colony cycle, ‘competition point’, whereas throughout cycle. These features create special opportunity investigate whether policing of worker-laid context-dependent (i.e. depends on origin and/or stage). We introduced artificial cells containing laid into bumblebee Bombus terrestris before their competition points observed fate eggs. In stages, majority were policed, demonstrating that was not activated point. However, pre-competition stage alone, smaller proportion workers' (15%) remained 20 h compared remaining (24%). More effective early cycle represents an adaptive, response when all normally unrelated colony.

The immune response against herpesvirus is more prominent in the early stages of MS.

OBJECTIVE To assess antibody levels against human herpesvirus type 6 (HHV-6), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and Chlamydia pneumoniae (CP) in serum from individuals in the early and late phase of MS. RESULTS A strong association was found between anti-HHV-6 immunoglobulin M antibodies and early MS (clinically isolated syndromes at high risk for MS, and short duration active relapsing-remitting MS)...

Convergent evolution of worker policing by egg eating in the honeybee and common wasp.

Mutual policing, where group members suppress each others' reproduction, is hypothesized to be important in the origin and stabilization of biological complexity. Mutual policing among workers in social insects can reduce within-colony conflict. However, there are few examples. We tested for worker policing in the common wasp Vespula vulgaris. Workers rapidly removed worker-laid eggs but left m...

Caste-specific differences in ecdysteroid titers in early larval stages of the bumblebee Bombus terrestris.

Mounting evidence implicates ecdysteroids in queen-worker differentiation during the last larval instars of highly social insects. In the present study, we analyzed ecdysteroid titers in queen and worker larvae of the bumblebee Bombus terrestris from the second to the early fourth instar. B. terrestris is of particular interest because caste is already determined in the second instar, presumabl...
